Photos: Melanomas and funny Moles

These photos will show you some of the features of malignant melanoma.

Please remember, sometimes a malignant melanoma can look different to those pictured here. If you have a mole you are concerned about, please ask your own doctor to check it for you.

[photo of a malignant melanoma] This mole has an irregular edge and the surface is very irregular. However, the most noticable feature is the mottled colour of this mole. Some areas are very pale, others are almost black.

Notice the size, nearly 1 cm across, and larger than the end of a pencil.

[photo of a malignant melanoma] Notice the irregular shape of this mole. The colour is very dark, and this mole had grown to 1 cm in size in 4 months.

Both this mole, and the one above, are superficial spreading melanomas.

[photo of a malignant melanoma] This mole is an odd shape, and has a nodular appearance. There is inflammation at the lower edge, and it has bled. Notice how the edges appear to be burrowing into the skin.

This mole has grown very quickly, and is a nodular malignant melanoma.

[photo of a malignant melanoma] This mole is large, and has been present for some time on the face of an elderly man, as a flat brown mark. Recently, a dark lumpy area has developed in the middle.

Notice the variation in colour and the irregular edge, and the thickened area in the middle. This is a slow growing lentigo malignant melanoma.
